This is the second book I have read by Elmer Kelton. Have to say that I am a devoted fan of Louis L'Amour and never thought I could enjoy another western writer like him. But in Elmer Kelton I have found an author right up there with Louis L'Amour. Will never replace him for me but I expect to spend many enjoyable hours in the old west with Kelton. The Buckskin Line follows the life of a young boy who is orphaned by an Indian attack. Follows his life until he becomes a Texas Ranger the story has all the elements of a good western, Indian attacks, brave men and women how they settled the west.

I enjoy Elmer Kelton books on life in Texas in the 1800's and early 1900's. Many of his books emphasize a moral principle, as did this one.
This book begins the story of Rusty Shannon and Elmer Kelton continues to develop the many characters introduced. I read this series many years ago and it is a pleasure to enjoy the way Mr Kelton spins the yarn.
Kelton weaves a good story using the same base cast of characters through the Texas Ranger series of books. The Buckskin Line is a good read. The series is well researched relative to life in early Texas.
Kelton is a great story teller who has clearly done his research and honed his craft. Great entertainment. Feels like you are there.
Am in the process of reading this First book in a series of 9. Very satisfied so far.
Good historical fiction. Elmer Kelton knows his Texas history and weaves it into a good novel with compelling characters. Well worth reading.
As a former Texas history teacher, this is as true to the period as fiction can be. I live between the Colorado and the Brazos, and our land was Tonkawa, with many places and creeks still called by their Tonkawa name. You want Texas, then read Kelton. Until his death, he lived in San Angelo which is directly on the Comanche war trail.
