There’s no real way to summarize the massive 1st volume of this ongoing story that online is already up to volume 5. It’s a serial story, that’s been written over the last couple of years and continues to grow weekly.

It’s essentially a slice of life LitRPG story that in this volume is a bit light on the RPG stuff. Characters level, magic and skills exist in the world but it’s more part of the cultural aspect of the world than anything pointedly game oriented.

If you’re bothered by light RPG mechanics, don’t be, the story more than makes up for that. The story follows two humans (hints at more) that were transported to a fantasy world where RPG mechanics are apart of the world. One gets the Innkeeper class when she stumbles into an abandoned inn and struggles to survive. The other becomes a runner, a on foot package delivery person, because she loves to run and be free. While neither story sounds compelling, they are.

Though the start of the novel is a bit slow, things pick up by the 5% and the story explodes with world building, progression, character growth, and even some comedy. It’s a slice of life story, which means you follow the two characters as they just do things daily in this new world but it’s still very interesting. I personally loved the thought and time the author put into developing the unique cultures of the monster races. The insect people were different from the lizard people and the gnolls. Each felt like they had a distinct culture and outlook on the world.

And that end, woah, was that an amazing action fest.

Not only is this novel a huge value for the page count, it’s engaging enough to keep you reading late into the night for multiple days. I just couldn’t put the thing down. Truly a great read.

The Wandering Inn Volume 1 edition by pirate aba Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Yes, all the stories are free at pirateaba's site. But I found Vol. 1 at and bought it . . . then spent a week reading my way through the episodes/volumes online. What an amazing achievement, for any storyteller! Pirateaba's writing skills have improved over time, probably due to practice (or leveling up) . . . This isn't scholarly fantasy writing, but it's superlative storytelling that reveals a richly imagined world with ethical and moral bedrock beneath the progress of flawed, interesting characters. There's an inescapable sense of purposeful, meaningful legend conveyed by these stories that is often missing in contemporary fantasy. Concepts of right, wrong, free will, struggle and growth are at the heart of The Wandering Inn. Thank you so much, pirateaba, for sharing the stories.
Staggeringly good. Literally couldn’t put it down for more than about 5 hours of sleep. I really hope these are released on fridays otherwise my work week is shot. I’ve read just about everything litrpg, and although light (no real stats) it is just enough to keep a framework and be really interesting. Great characters and story lines. Wins and losses abound.

ETA so good I became a patreon donation person. Almost finished through to book 5 on the web serial, will be being volumes on just to have convenience of content on kindle to re-read.
Simple review this time, because I have nothing bad to say.
The author does a great job of introducing us to compelling characters and then the author builds real depth. Their choices conform to their character and move the story forward. You will care about what happens to them. From time to time, the author shifts perspective from one character to the other, and this is one of the ONLY authors who gets it right so that these switches meaningfully add to the story. Mix in solid world-building, an interesting "levelling" system, and a fun lead, and the results are simply fun. PLUS, the story is long without ever feeling long, and when you finish, volumes 2, 3, and 4 are right around the corner (on the author's website). Presumably, he will get them polished up and to market here soon, and then I will buy them too.
I started reading this story on-line over a year ago the story does not start out fast so be sure to give it time to grow on you. The true joy of the story is the characters written with depth and detail that they come alive after a while you feel like you know what it is like to be there. As I said in the title I bought the story just to support the author as this is literally the best web story I have ever read.
While the first few chapters are a little rough, this is a wonderful story that flips the usual fantasy script on its head. In most stories in the genre, the protagonist from another world is some kind of unique or special adventurer who is destined to save the world. Erin decides to become an innkeeper instead, while introducing us to a deep and engaging world.

I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy and Isekai type stories as a refreshing change of pace. There is a diverse and fun cast of characters of various species and backgrounds who serve to broaden our view of this universe.
This story is an absolutely wonderful escape from reality. It isn't your typical epic tale of wizardry and strength, though those elements do exist. The main focus tends to be slice of life with those epic battle scenes interspersed throughout. I read this story in its web novel form and every Tuesday and Saturday I get to wake up to a new 10,000 word chapter, and I am extremely grateful for that pleasure.

That being said, this story really does start slow until the MC meets other characters. I have recommended to other friends of mine to start with another substory, the doctor. This has very little to do with the main story, but the pace is much quicker. If you would like to give those few chapters a try first to get immersed in the world you can find them on the web novel then just start at the chapter "1.00 D".
I have already read all existing chapters on the site, but bought this book to show my appreciation to the author. This story has amazing and unique characters, a vast and interesting world, a lot of unexpected plot twists. I have experienced a lot of different emotions while reading this story - more that on any other series.
