When a Laird Takes a Lady Claimed By the Highlander Rowan Keats 9780451416087 Books
When a Laird Takes A Lady has the requisite feuding clans and tested loyalties of many Highland novels. This medieval novel also has a kidnapped heroine and a strong brave leader. There are a few twists in this story to make it more original than the familiar star crossed lover trope.Heroine Isobail is a widow who actually liked her husband and he wasn't old enough to be her father, this is the first surprise of this story; too often widows are either traumatized by brutal husbands or widowed within a week of their wedding. She and her maid are set upon by brigands and she finds herself a prisoner of Aiden MacCurran. Isobail is cagey and unlike many kidnapped heroines in this genre has a decent plan on escaping her captors. She manages an attempt but is caught again by Aiden who does save her life.
Aiden is bitter and rightfully angry. He is accused of murder and theft and Isobail's brother believed him guilty. Isobail's brother was poisoned and this occurred after Aiden escaped. Aiden does not want to pour his wrath on Isobail, instead he is looking for information that Isobail has. He is convinced an invited guest and friend of her brother was the true villain and he knows Isobail knows the guest list on the evening of his arrest. Aiden has paid a hefty price for this man's sins. His clan is scattered and have only just reunited behind the ruins of an old keep. As their leader, Aiden is burdened to find the real thief and murderer.
Aiden is unexpected in that he does not threaten Isobail with physical harm ever in this story. His intent is seduction and he is a pretty suave character yet not insincere, he really does like Isobail.
Isobail has not developed great insight into people's actions and their very words. She is unwilling to give people a second chance and also unwilling to listen to other points of view. Several times she "chews her lip" which was code for I am thinking. I found this a bit annoying as it was an unneeded signal that Isobail had some smarts. Isobail has placed her late brother on a pedestal, not too surprising considering he left Isobail suddenly. Her great flaw is the loyalty she gives him in death, she believes every decision he made was 100% accurate and implicitly trusted his judgment about all matters. The other issue which I found disconcerting was that she harbored doubt about Aiden for so long and even more troubling was that she was willing to be his lover even when she was unsure of his innocence.
Despite these drawbacks, I did enjoy the story and that's because Isobail is brave. She is unafraid to face even death so that the innocent do not suffer. Her compassion is fierce and her resolve unshakable, especially in the last half of this book. Aiden is a good character but this story is much more about Isobail letting go of her long held beliefs and embracing a new and exciting future.

When a Laird Takes a Lady Claimed By the Highlander Rowan Keats 9780451416087 Books Reviews
Story began good, but was familiar to other story themes that I have read. I scanned through a lot as it was rather boring at times. For me, it lacked excitement and emotion from the characters. It was okay, but priced too high in my opinion.
Aiden MacCurran is an outlaw, out to clear his name and bring honor back to his clan. The help of Isabail Grant, who is on a mission of her own, is critical. Isabail is drawn into Aiden's predicament and is compelled to come to his aid. Sparks fly, wills clash and love blooms. Their story will keep you up into the wee hours of the night longing for the resolution, but not wanting the book to end. The highlands of Scotland have my heart. Bravo, Rowan Keats!
I have been lucky enough to have picked three good books in a row. This book was well written and has an interesting and well developed story line. The characters are all perfect for this book and I found myself invested in all of them. The author did a great job writing this story. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Excellent book a must read and with each word that is read you really are hooked, what an excellent writer! I never want to miss a book in every series and I highly recommend this book and all books by this author! Fantastic book, you will not want to put it down, I know I didn't and I wanted more and I feel that you will also! Great, Great, Book!
Fun highland romance with much intrigue and action. I enjoyed the appealing characters and the story had me riveted. Looking forward to more from Rowan Keats.
Though I read this book prior to reading book one, I loved this book. Who wouldn't want to be kidnapped by a tall handsome warrior, held captive yet not violated, at least not until you were willing. Ms. Keats paints a vivid picture of the time era, her scenes come to life and the characters are well developed. The struggle Isabail goes through, having lost a brother and believing Aiden is responsible for that death is believable. Living now among him and his people, seeing how he fiercely protects them, the gentleness in which he handles her is in direct conflict with the man she thought cold heartedly murdered her brother just to steal a necklace. Aiden is what every woman dreams of, strong, fierce, protective, loyal and yet gentle, with a heart a woman would be proud to hold in her hands. There is romance, intrigue, deception and delicious sex. I plan now to go back and read book one while anticipating the third book's release. Well done!
This is the second book I've read in this series and the second book by Rowan Keats I've read. This book was by far much better than the first book I read. The characters were better developed and defined and her writing style was much smoother than her first book in this series.
The two main characters, Isabail and Aiden, are two very strong and determined individuals. When you first meet Isabail you see her as a spoiled and pampered miss with a haughty attitude, not to mention her stern convictions of Aiden's guilt. Aiden on the other hand is angry and bitter over the injustice done to his family and clan; plus he's out to prove his innocence which involves getting Isabail involved.
Now the story starts getting really interesting....between these two....lots of twists and turns....bad guys....good guys....and all kinds of situations and minor characters whom are interesting and lend to the story.
I only gave this book a four star rating primarily because there are so many loose ends yet, from book one and this book as well. I'm off to read the third book hoping that I'll get some answers.
Happy reading! Cheers!! 🍻
