Rivka Galchen's newest is short but definitely not minor. Functioning as a collection of essays, fragments, and even lists about babies, raising a baby, and books (or rather, the dearth of books) about babies, Galchen lurches from insight to insight with the profound nonchalance of a perceptive and witty writer discovering a bevy of new and previously unconsidered sensations.

Galchen writes from the unique (and under-represented) perspective of a writer turned mother in the months just following her daughter's birth, reflecting on her thoughts about people, place, art, literature, among other things, through little wisdoms that ebb around and touch up against each other. Each individual chapter captures a singular insight but taken together, the book becomes an experience of a common personal transformation that is rarely written about with such determination and original insight.
Really enjoyed this book. Clever and sweet and literary.
As a new mom, I was laughing and crying throughout the entire book. I relate SO HARD. Very well-written, would recommend to anyone, really--not just mothers. Also, if you're hunting around for baby shower gifts, I would throw this in with whatever you decide to purchase. Seriously, it's great.

It felt like a conversation with another woman artist going through the baby stage. Musings on female writers with babies, witty thoughts... I loved it.
